China welcomes UN member states to participate in Group of Friends of Global Governance

China has welcomed all UN member states to join the newly launched Group of Friends of Global Governance, emphasizing cooperation on global governance reforms and multilateralism, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said on Wednesday.

Guo Jiakun made the remarks following China’s Permanent Mission to the UN announcement on Tuesday inaugurating the group at the UN platform.

“The Group of Friends of Global Governance is open to all UN member states and welcomes participation from countries sharing the same vision,” Guo said at a regular press briefing.

Guo noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping first proposed the Global Governance Initiative during the SCO Tianjin Summit, setting a roadmap for reforming the global governance system and providing stability amid a turbulent world. The initiative has received broad recognition and support from the international community.

The spokesperson explained that the group aims to bring countries together to exchange ideas, cooperate on key global issues, and pool collective wisdom for reforming and improving global governance.

He added that participating countries highly commended China’s leadership in global governance and welcomed the group’s establishment, expressing hope that it would reinforce multilateralism and advance reforms in the international system.

Following the meeting, the 43 founding members issued a joint statement affirming their commitment to uphold the post-World War II order, strengthen the UN’s role, address global challenges, and respond to the aspirations of peoples worldwide.
