China Warns Japan Against Nuclear Ambitions, Urges Respect for International Law and Historical Responsibility

China on Friday strongly cautioned Japan against pursuing nuclear ambitions, urging Tokyo to stop “testing the bottom line of international justice,” according to a spokesperson from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun made the remarks during a regular press briefing in response to comments by a senior Japanese official suggesting that Japan should possess nuclear weapons. Guo described such statements as deeply concerning, saying they reflect the rising influence of right-wing conservative forces in Japan seeking to revive militarism, undermine the post-war international order, and accelerate the country’s remilitarization.

Guo stressed that such rhetoric runs counter to regional peace and stability, particularly at a time of heightened global security challenges. He noted that 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, calling it a moment for Japan to demonstrate responsibility through action rather than words.

“Japan must deeply reflect on its historical crimes, strictly abide by international law and its pacifist constitution, stop making excuses for military expansion, and cease challenging the international community with dangerous nuclear ambitions,” Guo said.

China’s remarks underscore growing regional sensitivities surrounding security, historical memory, and non-proliferation, as Beijing reiterates its call for Japan to uphold its post-war commitments and contribute constructively to peace and stability in Asia.
